It’s the rainy season in Monterrey. We’ve had rain almost
everyday for 2 weeks. Most of the kids love it because if they have a “cool”
caregiver, they can play soccer in the rain or slide down hill in the rain. I’m
not that cool; I only let them do that on weekends. Most kids at the children’s home are terribly
afraid of thunder and lightening. When it’s dark out and we’re settling down
for bed, thunder and lightening can cause the power to go out and chaos to take
it’s place: screaming, running around the dorm or running outside for “help.” Even
my girls, at their age, are afraid of the dark and what might come in the
unseen. Light is what that brings security.
Last week I prepared them with the news of a possible hurricane headed our way.
They knew we were ready with flashlights and my computer was charged for music
or a movie. Soon enough the lights went off. A short scream was let out as I
reminded them that we are prepared and we do not have to be afraid. They all
rushed to my room and one stayed crying in the bathroom. The only way to stop
herself from screaming was crying. As we all went to console her, she just
repeated how scared she was. Thankfully, minutes later the lights came on.
She proceeded to tell me how unsafe her house is. She had a
dream that her brother had drowned in a hole because of the rain.
We are so blessed at Douglas. The kids reminded us this
Sunday at church how grateful we are to have a roof over our heads when it rains. Many of them
come from homes that are unsafe in the rain. Thank God for givers like you that
bring shelter and security to the kids here at Douglas. We could not do what we
do without you. This week, as we face the rains of a hurricane, the girls and I are definitely thankful for you !
